The laid table
King David was chosen by God to be king over Israel. From his youth he was in close contact with God, the Creator of heaven and earth. He was a statesman with great military power. He was a musician and a poet. He was blessed and gifted of God and a father of several sons.
One of them was called Absalom. A liar and a cheat. Tricked his father. He said to him, I want to go to Hebron and fulfill my vow that I swore to the Lord. When he said goodbye, his father said: Go in peace!
Absalom plans a conspiracy
Absalom sent out secret messengers to all the tribes of Israel and said: "As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet you shall cry out: 'Absalom is king in Hebron!
Two hundred men went out of Jerusalem with Absalom. You had been invited, you had not recognized anything about the matter.
King David's escape
A messenger came to David and said: The heart of the men of Israel is behind Absalom. David said to all his servants, Arise, and let us flee! Hurry up. Otherwise there is no escaping Absalom.
David fled the city with his rulers and all his family. He stopped at the last house on the outskirts. He let everyone who had come with him pass him by. His bodyguard and 600 followers. And all the people wept with a loud voice.
Then the king went across the brook Kidron on the way to the desert. David wept as he walked, his head was covered, and he went barefoot. The people who were with him had their heads covered and went on their way weeping.
Absalom and all his men pursued David. He wanted to overthrow his father from the throne. Can we empathize what thoughts and what moved in his heart.
Unexpected change - family drama:

- where do we get our help from
King David could pray and he did. Support, through the loyalty of his friends. Then the big surprise in Mahanajim. Which he had no idea.
Situations when we get into trouble. Where do we get our help from?
- strife in the family
- disappointments
- mobbing
- exclusion etc.
Location: Mahanajim
A major humanitarian relief effort was launched. The benefactors thought: surely they are hungry, thirsty and exhausted from the march through the desert.
The men of the relief action are named:
- Shobi from Rabba
- Machir from Lo Dabar
- Barsillai from Roglim
They had taken on the responsibility of receiving King David and his entourage.
Big surprise for David and his people.
Everything was prepared: sleeping mats, pots, bowls, wheat, barley flour, roasted grains, beans and lentils, honey and butter, cheese, as well as sheep and goats. Here they could eat their fill and rest. How good that there are benefactors. This event - experience stays in David's memory.
David mentions this experience in his Psalm 23 (ESV):
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23 The good shepherd wants to be our help too. He longs for a close relationship with us. Those who hear his true word read and practice fellowship in prayer like King David.
