2. A divine and human help

Story from Mark 7:31-37

The Bible reports that Jesus, the Son of God, was traveling. From Tire Jesus went to the city of Sidon, but moved on. As always, many people followed him.

Suddenly Jesus stopped and a deaf and mute person was brought to him. his suffering. He is deaf, which means his environment has no acoustic connection. Voices, sounds, noises are present. Although noises reach his ears, he is unable to pick up the sounds. He is deaf. Feelings of isolation and fear are part of it.

a) The friends of the deaf and dumb

They are friends or relatives who know the Savior. Who may have experienced healing themselves. They come to Jesus with the request: "Lord, lay hands on him!"

His friends don't only think of themselves, but want to show their neighbor active compassion and thus follow Christ's commandment of mercy.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:7 (ESV)

An example for us. They ask the Lord to lay hands on them. Our intercessions for others are a privilege and part of working together to build God's kingdom.

b) His healing

The Lord Jesus takes him away from the crowd. He shouldn't hear the noise of the people first. He wants his sheep to hear his voice. He wants to reveal himself personally to the deaf.

The Lord heals him, making the sick understand what he is doing through his gestures. Puts his fingers in his ear and touches his tongue with his saliva.

He, the Son of God, makes himself completely one with him in his situation, takes upon himself his sufferings.

Jesus looks up to heaven as a sign of communion with the Father also in this work. Let out a sigh that shows his sensitivity. By the word of his power he spoke: "Effata" (meaning: Open!). In the same instant the man could hear and speak.

c) What a great event

Now he can hear and speak and make himself understood by people. He learns to distinguish the voices of others. And best of all, he can hear his prayers and thanksgiving in his own voice. What a great gift.

Those present could not believe what they had seen. It's just great what Jesus is doing! He has done everything well.

3. For us today when we need help

And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
Psalms 50,15 (ESV)

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11,28 (ESV)

Jesus opened access to the throne of God for all people.

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4,16 (ESV)
