Faith and trust

Faith is trust in the love and grace of God in Christ. (Josef Simsa)

D.L. Moody quotes: Trust in yourself and you will be disappointed; trust in your friends, and they will die and leave you alone; trust in your good reputation, and some slanderous tongue may ruin it; trust in God and you will never be put to shame.

We read from Paul:

Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.
2 Corinthians 1:9 (ESV)

We wonder why Paul had such strong faith in God.

The Second Letter to the Corinthians contains an unusual collection of words that express suffering: fear, beatings, dangers, persecution, sadness, weakness, and so on. At the same time, we find words of comfort, joy, and victory.

1. How do we define trust?

Trust is a quality that reflects one's outlook on life, both in the present and the future. The reason modern man has lost his trust is that he has lost his Creator.

According to "enlightened" thought, man is the center, not God.

A man said to the youth pastor and author Wilhelm Busch: “I believe in a higher being, whether I call it Allah, God, Providence, or Fate, it's all the same.” To this, Wilhelm Busch replied: “Perhaps you will soon find yourselves in a crisis or great distress: Will you then flee to Providence! – Will you call upon Fate? Or will you then grasp at the higher being? – Then it will turn out that you don't even know God by name. – You are a stranger to Him, and He is distant from you.”

2. Who do we trust?

  • Can I trust my partner?
  • Is he or she transparent?
  • Is my partner allowed to know everything I do?
  • My shopping, activities, what I look at on the computer, etc.

3. Why is trust dependent on faith?

  • Faith is the power that allows us to take a step toward God.
  • Trust is the serenity with which we may rest in God.
  • Trust is an inner conviction that can calmly wait for God to act. (based on Hebrews 11:1-3)

We can trust in God's very essence and his eternal existence.

Jesus speaks to Thomas:

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 (ESV)

We can confidently rely on God's omnipotence.

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Ephesians 3:20-21 (ESV)

Hella Heizmann writes in her song:

1. Whoever trusts in God need not fear the dreams of the night and loneliness. They may go into the new day with hope.

2. Whoever trusts in God may know themselves to be safe in the hands of love that hold them. They may joyfully see God's help.

Refrain: For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you, to protect you day and night. (Psalm 91:11)

4. Conclusion

This protection concerns both salvation in God and physical protection.

Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.
Hebrew 10:35 (ESV)

Our knowledge goes with us to the grave, our faith goes with us to glory. (R. A. Schröder)

We have a powerful God!

that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever.
Psalm 48:15 (ESV)
