Milestones on the way
These are the stages of the people of Israel, when they went out of the land of Egypt by their companies under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.
Numbers 33,1 (ESV)
Camp sites are places of rest, recreation and reflection.
After 400 years in Egypt, the people of Israel set out at God's command to reach the promised land, Canaan.
1. Stages of the people of Israel
God did not urge His people on this journey, but gave them ample time to travel and camp. In some places they stayed only a few days or weeks, in others, months or even years.
There were stages towards the goal. E.g. verse 9 the camp Mara. Only God had to work a miracle there, the water was undrinkable.
Then he led them to the next camp, Elim, where they found twelve springs of good water and seventy palm trees. A right place to gather new strength.
The same goes for us on our journey through life:
God wants to lead us to camp sites where we can gather new strength. There are some obstacles on this journey:
Difficult stretches and many problems to overcome, dangers, hardships, internal and external struggles, disappointments
But there are also some good times:
Encouragement when things seem to get stuck, faith-strengthening experiences. I don't know which way we're on right now.
Does the water flow freely as in Elim, or is it a bitter spring as in Mara?
Eight words that led me to a camp of calm: It was 1962, I prayed a prayer I will never forget. Six words, the Lord heard and answered them. "Lord give me time to read the Bible" Soon after, I developed severe back pain. The whole body spasmed. Doctor's diagnosis: "scratches on both kidneys". Five weeks hospitalization. I was reminded of my prayer, "Lord give me time to read the Bible." Hospital a camp site for Bible reading. I calmed down inside and out.
2. Always with the goal in mind
We are all still on the way. Some difficulties will still have to be overcome, but there will also be times of blessing.
An old song says: "One day tells the next, my life is a journey to eternal bliss."
Despite some difficulties, the people of Israel had reached their goal and were often able to experience the miraculous power of God along the way.
It is important that we reach our goal in life. The Bible is God's journey map. A living will is good. The certainty of reaching the eternal camp means much more: Eternal fellowship with God.
3. Words of encouragement from the apostle Paul
Who will sustain you to the end, guiltless min the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1. Corinthians 1,8 (ESV)
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
2. Timothy 4,7 (ESV)
Let's keep the goal in mind. Not the beginning is crowned, but the end! I wish us all a happy journey under the blessing hand of God.
Song by Paul Gerhardt 1607 - 1676
You command your ways and what ails your heart. the most faithful care of him who directs heaven!
The air and wind of the clouds give paths, run and track, which will also find paths where your foot can walk.
