Growth and flourishing

Growth and flourishing in all areas is something mysterious.

We can only create the conditions for growth, but it is God's omnipotence that makes the sun, wind, and rain work together so that anything can flourish.

In spring, when it warms up, germination and sprouting begin everywhere. Buds and leaves emerge, bulbs show their green shoots – blossoms. The sun awakens the dormant plants; everything rejoices, thrives, and unfolds. Every kind of flower, grain, vegetable, and tree has its own special seed. The seeds are all different. Nothing is monotonous in nature. In this,

God's abundance and glory are revealed.

1. Fourfold is the field, man, how is your heart disposed

The Parable of the Sower:

  • A farmer sowed grain. A few seeds fell on the path. They were trampled and eaten by birds.
  • Other seeds fell on rocky ground. They withered.
  • Some seeds fell among the thistles and choked them.
  • The rest of the seed fell on fertile soil. The grain grew and yielded a hundred times the amount sown. (according Lucas 8:4-5)

God's power can be recognized in the way we sow the seeds and God grants the plants the opportunity to flourish, so too does God's word want to be sown and sprout within us.

2. The seed is the word of God

The seed of God's word bears fruit in the hearts of those who open themselves to it. These are people willing to let their lives be transformed. People who not only hear God's word, but also put it into practice. Not just know it, but also believe it. Just as we bear fruit in the natural world, so too should we bear fruit in the spiritual realm.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. John 15:4 (ESV)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV)

Since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
1 Peter 1:23 (ESV)

3. Praise and thank God

When we observe all this in nature in spring, summer, and autumn, and marvel at the countless plants and fruits, we become aware that God has created such glorious, colorful growth for the eyes and tongue:

  • To see
  • To taste
  • To rejoice
  • To praise and thank God
