The Eternal God

The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. Deuteronomy 33:27a (ESV)

1. God is our refuge

Israel was about to enter the promised land. Canaan was still in enemy hands and had to be taken. The people knew that this could not happen without a great struggle.

Some fears may well have risen in the hearts of the Israelites. Right now they needed renewed courage and confidence.

2. The Eternal God

In this crucial hour, Moses wanted to fix her eyes on the eternal God.

He is the god of primeval times who does not change. He has proven to be her helper and protector in the past.

They knew that he would not leave them in the future either.

This also applies to us personally. Below us are his mighty arms.

We cannot plunge like an artist without a safety net. His hands catch us.

David says:

Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering. Psalms 26:1 (ESV)

3. God is our safety.

In Psalm 139:5, David expresses this unbelievable fact that God cares about people in this way: You surround me on all sides and hold your hand over me.

In a small fishing village in Sicily, a poignant story is said to have happened a long time ago. The laws were very strict back then.
Adultery was punishable by death. Those condemned to death were thrown from a high cliff into the sea.

In this village lived a young married couple. One day the man left the house to go about his business for a while. It was then that the woman became involved with another man
and became an adulteress. She was sentenced to death.

The date of execution was set and announced. In the meantime her husband had returned.Would he attend the execution, talk to her, or even forgive her? The whole village was gathered. The tension rose - but the man did not come.

The executioner led her to the edge of the rock and delivered the fatal blow. Hours had passed before it spread through the town like wildfire: the woman is alive!

What happened? When the man heard of her infidelity, his love for her overcame his disappointment at her misstep.

In great haste he gathered all the fishing nets he could find, made a large net out of it and, in danger of dying, fastened it below the cliff edge. The net of love had caught her, she was allowed to live.

4. How much greater is God's love for us?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (ESV)

Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
Psalms 146:3 (ESV)

In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge. Proverbs 14:26 (ESV)

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.
Jeremiah 17:7 (ESV)

Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.
Hebrews 10:35 (ESV)

That this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever.
Psalms 48:14 (ESV)
