Surprising encounter

According to Luke 2

We accompany Simeon. His name means “hearing.” His place of residence was Jerusalem. His environment, most people partly pious, partly indifferent. The leading circles were stuck in their legal systems. A few still had a quiet hope for the imminent arrival of the Messiah.

1. Prophecy fulfilled

There lived a man named Simeon in Jerusalem. He lived according to God's will, was in awe of Him, and waited longingly for the Savior of Israel.

What does the LORD your God require of you? Nothing else than that you respect him and always follow his ways, that you love him and serve him with all your heart and with all devotion.

Simeon was filled with the Holy Spirit. Through him he knew that he would not die until he saw Christ the Savior.

2. An unplanned encounter

Led by the Holy Spirit, he had gone to the temple that day. When Mary and Joseph brought the child in to dedicate him to God. That was Simeon's greatest joy. He took the child in his arms and praised God.

Complete certainty. Lord, you have kept your word. Your word has been fulfilled! Now I can die in peace. I saw it with my own eyes: You have brought us salvation!

3. Simeon's prophetic statement

The whole world will know. Your light illuminates all nations and brings greatness and glory to your people Israel.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (ESV)

On this special day, the prophet Hannah was also in the temple. She was a widow, 84 years old. Was often in the temple to serve God, pray and fast.

4. The multiple praise

Jesus was born and was no longer lying in a manger. He is the Son of God and because of him the divine revelations existed.

The shepherds in the fields of Bethlehem heard a message from an angel: “Do not be afraid! Today the Savior was born!” Now an innumerable host of angels surrounded her, praising God: Glory to God in heaven! For he brings peace to the world and turns to people in love. Finally, the shepherds returned to their flocks. They praised God and thanked him for what they had heard and seen. Everything had been as the angel had told them.

Simeon was like the shepherds in the fields of Bethlehem; they also praised God for what they had seen and heard. The prediction has come true. He praised and worshiped. His words: Lord you have kept your word, I have seen it with my own eyes.

While Simeon was still talking to Mary and Joseph, Hannah came over and also began to praise God. She was filled with great joy and immediately said: “The Savior is here.” She told all the people who were waiting for the liberation of Jerusalem about this child. Hanna shared her experience. Everyone should know who Jesus is!

5. Call to praise God

We too can praise and praise the Lord of the world. We can experience his presence in the house of God every day.

A Psalm for giving thanks. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.Psalm 100:1-5 (ESV)
