Jesus and Christmas
Many people ask the same question today. Where is he? Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Jesus was King yesterday. He is king today and he will be king tomorrow too.
1. Yesterday Jesus was the „King of Salvation“
When Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, coming from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples burst out into jubilation. They sang loudly: „Praise be to the king who comes on behalf of the Lord“ He was recognized as a king when he was born. The magicians who came from the east brought him presents and worshiped him. Suddenly there was an innumerable crowd of angels who praised God:
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2,14 (ESV)
Shepherds who saw the child lying in the manger, as they were told, returned to their flocks. They praised God and thanked him for what they had heard and seen. Jesus‘ ministry on earth: When Jesus was thirty years old and began his ministry, people saw his rule and authority. He taught with such authority that even his greatest opponents had to admit: „No man has ever spoken like this!“ (According to John 7:46)
Jesus was more than a poet or a statesman – more than an eminent figure. Jesus did not come to establish an earthly kingdom. His real mission was to die for the sin of all people. He knew that we humans are unable to pay the price of our salvation. So he gave himself as a ransom for us.
Christmas is just the beginning of the story – Golgotha is its goal!
2. Today is Jesus, King of Hearts
„For God’s kingdom is already here – in the midst of you“. (according to Luke 17:21)
A prayer:
That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faiththat you, being brooted and grounded in love. Ephesians 3,16-17 (ESV)
Jesus is the only King in the hearts of those who believe in him. No matter what people we belong to and what skin color we have.
- He is the Savior for sinners
- Origin of peace
- Hope for the whole world
- Is he the master of your desires?
- Of your thoughts and ideas?
- Can he be the master of your social environment?
- Is he master of your family and your own life?
Let us learn from the apostle Paul who says:
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2,20 (ESV)
Let us also give Jesus all the space in our hearts, then we can join the shepherds and angels in the praise of God at Christmas time:
Worship the king, praise Immanuel, highest God, mighty lord, bright morning star. And in all eternity we want to praise him and we rule with him now and always. (Text: Gitta Leuschner).
