Authority

And i have given you the authority

Imagine you have received a power of attorney from your best friend. Now you could go to the bank on his behalf and do the banking. You have permission to do that and no bank clerk will deny you that. You are entitled because your best friend has great confidence in you and allows you to act on his behalf. That’s how it is with you and God. He trusts you and he trusts you to represent him and his kingdom appropriately in his sense.

The basic requirement for this power of attorney is that we live a life with Jesus. Open your heart to Jesus. In the Bible we read that Jesus knocks on the door of the heart, he wishes that we open our heart and that he could have fellowship with us. Most of the time we have something to hide and that’s why we hesitate or keep our hearts closed. We hide what is embarrassing to us or what we know very well that it is not okay. But what is not okay?

God explains to us in the Bible that we humans are sinful from the beginning, we don’t care about him, we live separately from him and do things that are destructive. It can happen to us all our lives.

Now comes the positive news. God loved us so much that he sent his only son to earth and became a man and took our sins on the cross. He has reestablished the connection to God. What else do we have to do from our side? We need to confess our sins to Him, make a change of mind (old word repentance) and ask Jesus that he comes into our life and we let him be captain on our lifeboat.

Another basic requirement for God to grant you his general power of attorney is that you are trustworthy and fully committed to him and not do your own thing with his money. The Bible calls this „being a friend of God“ or „being a follower of Jesus“. Reading the Bible means taking it as the basis for action and decision. It means being in conversation with God, which is also called prayer. A deep, trusting relationship must exist and be cultivated. God does not want performance in order to give you authority, but a trusting relationship with you. God gives us his Holy Spirit so that we are not overwhelmed. He is our support and leads us into all truth and helps us to make wise decisions. The Holy Spirit gives us perspective and is our advisor.

Power of attorney does not mean that we are the ones who perform miracles or heal the sick. The real miracle or healing of the sick is accomplished by Jesus, we only make ourselves available to him.

Here is an example from the Bible when a paralytic was healed:

Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
Acts 3, 6-8 (KJB)

And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go.
Acts 3, 12-13 (KJB)

What am I authorized to do? Here are a few examples from the Bible:

  • We can pray for the sick so that they get well
  • I can pass on the words from the Bible which then create a change in the listener
  • We can do miracles in his name
  • If we ate something fatal out of ignorance, it won’t harm us
  • We can even cast out demons in his name
  • Authority to avert harm
  • The light of the world (Jesus is in us) will illuminate the dark world
  • We may rule over the earth, animals and plants
