Under God's protection

Psalm 91 describes very vividly and impressively how he has experienced God's protection in dangers. Yet his prayer radiates a strong trust in God. For centuries, people have been praying and singing these Psalm words.

1. Excerpts from Psalm 91

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.Psalm 91:1-6 (ESV)

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11 (ESV)

Our youngest grandson was once in extreme danger. Today he serves God. He had real angelic protection, as it says in Psalm 91:11.

Song: Who trusts in God need not fear the dreams of the night and loneliness. He may go into the new day with hope. For He has commanded His angels concerning you, that they may guard you, that they may protect you day and night. (Hella and Klaus Heizmann)

2. But there are also crises

Crises such as illness, financial difficulties, persecution, fleeing from war, etc., and no one has control over them. To what extent does our faith give us security in such times? What can help?

God listens to our prayers

He hears us, do we know this from our own experiences? Have we encountered and accompanied people who had to go through such valleys? Regardless of whether we are personally affected or accompany others: It is necessary that we perceive our pain, endure it before God, remain in His presence, and wait in hope – so that at the end of the day we can say: "The Lord has heard my prayer!" (Egbert Warzecha)

3. May we consciously seek refuge in God!

To what extent is it a comfort that Jesus has overcome the world?

I I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 (ESV)

People from the Bible also had to endure painful experiences, such as Jeremiah. He was beaten and imprisoned. His hands and feet were locked in a wooden block (according to Jeremiah 20:1-3).

But then the encouraging statement to Jeremiah:

"For I will surely save you, and you shall not fall by the sword, but you shall have your life as a prize of war, because you have put your trust in me, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 39:18 (ESV)

Jesus sought refuge in prayer:

Jesus held on to his trust in God until the end and sought refuge in prayer. God did not spare Jesus from death. He died for our sins on the cross at Golgotha. Jesus has risen and ascended to heaven and is waiting for us.

4. Closing words
  • It is also this nevertheless that characterizes the psalmist.
  • It is the trust in God,
  • in which we too find stability and security.
Let us read the voice that speaks in the name of God:

“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.
Psalm 91:14-15 (ESV)
