Living sources
Water, there is hardly a second image in Scripture to describe the blessings of God upon His people. Water is essential for the life of humans, animals, and the plant world.
We all know the properties of water:
- it refreshes
- revives
- cleanses
- it waters the earth
- fruit can grow
1. With God is the source of life
Through the window of God's Word, we receive the decisive insights and the most delightful outlooks!
- He, the Father, has called me into life
- He, the Son, has earned for me the sonship of God and eternal life
- He, the good Holy Spirit, renews my heart
2. Jesus Christ is the source of salvation
In Him dwells the entire fullness of grace and truth. Jesus speaks to the woman at Jacob's well:
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” John 4:10 (ESV)
God's Word, the source of comfort, joy, and strength, according to Psalm 119:50
3. The invitation to the springs
Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
Isaiah 55:1 (ESV)
Three times, come here!
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. John 7:37 (ESV)
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. John 7:37 (ESV)
The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. Revelation 22:17 (ESV)
4. The Effect of the Springs
You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, and blessing its growth. Psalm 65:10 (ESV)
4. The Effect of the Springs
David praises God's goodness: How precious is your goodness, God... Children of men are satisfied from the rich goods of your house, and you make them drink with delight as from a stream. – Abundance, refreshment, revitalization. For with you is the fountain of life. According to Psalm 36:9-10.
David's song of thanks for spiritual and bodily blessings.
You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, and blessing its growth. Psalm 65:10 (ESV)
He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.
Psalm 110:7 (ESV)
...having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word.
Ephesians 5:26 B (ESV)
This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.
Psalm 119:50 (ESV)
Life-giving water:
But on the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out: If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!
Whoever believes in me, streams of living water will flow from their body, as the Scripture says. Note the sequence: thirst – drink – overflow.
5. The normal spiritual course
We hunger and thirst for life. We come to Jesus and he satisfies hunger and thirst; and immediately have abundance for others.
- Abundance, that counts
- overflowing prayer that goes beyond our own circle
- overflowing love and joy is contagious to all people
- overflowing faith
- overflowing giving, no longer feels difficult
- overflowing service
